From Anbe Vaa to Poove Unaakagha: TV show titles that are inspired from Tamil films

Tamil TV has a prolonged history of using some of the popular Tamil movie titles. Many TV shows have gained initial popularity by having show titles based on popular films. Here’s a quick look at such shows and their titles.

2/8

Roja

The title is taken from one of the cult classic movies by director Mani Ratnam, ‘Roja’. This movie was a national sensation not only for the screenplay but also for the music, which marked the debut of music composer A.R. Rahman. Meanwhile, the Tamil TV series, Roja, is also a consistent performer in the TRP charts.

3/8

Rettai Roja

This popular title was inspired by the Tamil movie Irattai Roja, a Kushboo and Urvasi starrer. On the other hand, the Tamil TV serial had earlier featured Bigg Boss Shivani Narayanan in dual roles. Now, actress Chandini Tamilarasan has replaced Shivani.

4/8

Anbe Vaa

Anbe Vaa is one of the classic hits of the legendary actor M.G. Ramachandran. While the film is a romantic comedy, the TV show is also about a love storey set in a familiar setting. Varun and Bhoomika hail from two completely different backgrounds.

5/8

Poove Unakkaga

Who can forget Poove Unakkaga, the ‘90s blockbuster that made actor Vijay a box office star? The story of the Tamil TV show ‘Poove Unakkaga’ revolves around two friends, Keerthi and Poovarasi, who both fall in love with Kathir. This triangular drama forms the crux of the story.

6/8

Raja Rani

The daily soap is titled after the recent blockbuster ‘Raja Rani’ directed by Atlee, and featuring Nayanthara and Arya in the lead roles. Needless to say, the Kannada daily soap is yet another romantic flick that features Alya Manasa and Sanjeev.

7/8

Mouna Raagam

Another movie of Mani Ratnam ‘title’ was inspired by Tamil TV showmakers. Kadhambari (Kaadhu maa), a rich, argumentative girl spoiled by her parents and was married to Karthik Krishna, a famous singer. They gave birth to Shruthi. As the story goes, it is revealed that before the marriage of Karthik, he falls for Malliga, a village girl, but unfortunately, Karthik leaves the village and, under pressure from his family.
