Music as a universal connector

“Music is beyond cultures, beyond language and knowledge. It connects people purely through emotions,” Saindhavi shared, emphasising how music transcends boundaries and unites hearts across the globe.

Her evolution from child prodigy to mentor

Starting her career at a young age, Saindhavi celebrates two decades in playback singing this year. “I’ve had my share of competitions, mentorship and learning. Today, I try to give back what I’ve learned to the young talents on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. More than just vocal finesse, I look for emotional depth. That’s what touches people,” she explained.

On being a judge and mentor

While evaluating contestants, emotional expression tops her list. “Vocal technique and stage presence can be taught, but emotions, those can’t be manufactured. That’s the soul of music,” she affirmed.

Balancing critique with care

Dealing with sensitive contestants is a challenge. “Criticism should always be constructive. Otherwise, it might break their confidence. We have to be mindful and nurturing, especially with emotionally sensitive performers,” she added.

Motherhood, music, and self-growth

Even with the demands of motherhood, Saindhavi never stopped learning. “Even on days I couldn’t sing, I made sure I listened. Exploring my vocal range and pushing boundaries keeps me going.”

Digital shift and rising independent artists

“Today, you don’t need to be a playback singer to be popular. Social media and streaming platforms have given space for independent voices. That’s a great change,” she noted.

On her inspirations

“I’ve been a huge fan of M.S. Subbulakshmi Amma and Shreemati Bombay Jayashri. They’ve deeply shaped my sensibilities. And in contemporary music too, I draw inspiration constantly,” Saindhavi said.

Advice for aspiring musicians

Her golden rule: Never stop learning. “Keep the passion alive, keep evolving. That’s the only way to sustain in music.”

One song for World Music Day?

Smiling thoughtfully, she said, “It would be hard to choose one. But any song that carries honest emotion, regardless of language or genre, that, to me, captures the spirit of World Music Day.”
