“On Gurpurab we all head to the gurdwara with the family early in the morning,” she says, adding, “We listen to kirtan and paath and then partake in and also participate in preparing langar there.”

The day is also special in terms of traditional food being prepared. “We prepare meethe chawal, a popular dish made with basmati rice, ghee, sugar, saffron and dry fruits at home. It is the highlight of our day besides prayers,” she says.

Among her earliest memories are those of “packing prasad all night and then distributing it among the sangat (participants) of Prabhat Pheris that start few days ahead of Gurpurab at dawn,” she says.

Calling herself a “very spiritual person,” Hunar says, “I believe in doing good karma, having a clean heart and never hurting anyone. Guru Nanak Devji inspires us to lead a life filled with compassion and love for others and Gurpurab is a reminder for all of us to lead that life.”
