2020 has been a bizarre year owning to the pandemic and made us see things, which none of us had ever imagined. Reality shows with no audience, shooting from home, romancing on-screen wearing PPE kits and what not. As the year nears its end, let’s take a look at some of the unimaginable and impossible things we saw on TV:

Kartik-Naira’s PPE kit romance on Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai

TV shoots had just resumed and the fiction shows were adapting to the new normal making way for new form of scripts. While daily soaps returned after 3 months, makers tried to implement the current scenario in their script and it paved way for actors wearing PPE kits and face shields on TV. Shivangi Joshi and Mohsin Khan, who are seen as Naira and Kartik in YRKKH, were seen romancing while getting ready wearing the safety gear. Twitterati had a field day laughing over this scene. Viral content and theme-based shows

Move over the saas-bahu drama, the pandemic paved way after a rap went viral and also a show that has Lockdown in the title. Saath Nibhaana Saathiya 2 was created on popular demand after music artiste Yashraj Mukhate’s rap on ‘Rasode Mein Kaun Tha’ went viral. The old cast returned for the second season to introduce the show. Apart from this, Lockdown Ki Lovestory was announced featured Mohit Malik and Sana Sayyad. The show’s theme had a couple’s families stuck together during the imposed lockdown and how they try to implement a lockdown wedding. However, the theme has now gone for a toss. Pic: Instagram

Actors wearing masks on TV

While maintaining social distance during a scene is not always possible, actors made sure to wear masks in required scenes. In scenes were many actors were required, cast would be seen wearing masks. Few shows also called actors on required days of shoot so that low attendance is maintained. Pic: Instagram

Reality TV show judges made to sit with glass partition

Shows like Indian Idol featuring judges Neha Kakkar, Vishal Dadlani and Himesh Reshammiya were seen sitting with glass partition in between them. With actors testing positive for Covid-19 on the sets, extra precautions were being administered. Pic: Instagram

No audience rule

Reality shows, quiz shows implemented no audience rule. For the first time on TV you got to see, audience cutouts being kept behind Archana Puran Singh on The Kapil Sharma Show and fans connecting with host Kapil Sharma through online video sharing platform. Kaun Banega Crorepati, which is hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, is an audience-free set with only family members of the contestant on hot seat giving them company. Pic: Instagram

Virtual auditions

Reality shows like Roadies Revolution and Indian Idol opted for virtual auditions. No more long lines or standing in queues. Roadies hosted a month-long virtual audition and also selected a contestant for a direct entry to the show. Judges connected through video platform, which also gave a glimpse of their work from home scenes. Pic: Instagram

Shooting for episodes virtually

Shoot from home became the new normal to maintain safety reasons. While celeb like Rajeshwari Sachdev shot from home for her show Shaadi Mubarak after testing positive for Covid-19, Erica Fernandes and Aamna Sharif were shooting from home for Kasautii…for safety reasons.
