Maine Pyar Kiya actress Bhagyashree on getting married to husband Himalay against her family’s wish; quitting Bollywood and her filmy real-life romance

Reality show Smart Jodi contestant Bhagyashree spoke about how she got married to Himalay Dassani against her parents’ wishes and how her parents did not accept their relationship initially. The couple had eloped in 1990 due to her parents' objection to the wedding. In the reality show, Bhagyashree and Himalay shared it all about how they met, their filmy love story, why she quit films and more.

On suddenly quitting films

Bhagyshree replies, “I tell everybody. After ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’… (She goes to hold her husband) maine pyar kiya.” She also said, “I didn’t think anything about films. My husband was very possessive, I didn’t get time to think.” Himalay adds, “I became a national villain after marrying the heroine of everyone’s lives.”

How they met and fell in love

As Bhagyshree reveals that they were together since school, Himalay adds, “Since 8th standard, we have known each other.” The actress says, “I was weak in Maths and he was very good. So I befriended him to learn Maths. He would teach me in the library.” Her husband adds, “I was good in Maths. I got an opportunity and I utilized it.” “Yeh upar waale ki ganit thi hume milane ke liye,” Bhagyashree added.

Bhagyashree’s filmy love story

The actress lived a filmy love story for real. She says, “When I would go to college, traffic would stop when I had to cross the road just because I am his girlfriend. Aisi setting ki thi.” Also, in the college canteen one table would always stay reserved for her. Bhagyashree shares, “He didn’t even have to be present. He had many connections. And things would just happen.” Bhagyashree reveals that she also made him propose to her by saying, “You can say whatever you want, I won’t say no.” He then proposed to her over a phone call.

Himalay on Bhagyashree quitting films

He says, “We were in our 20s. We just got married and we were in constant state of honeymoon. We were in a joint family and there was no moment of privacy. We couldn’t lock our room and anybody would enter. Only at night we could close it.” Himalay reveals that he makes it a point even now to have a date night and the romance should live on. He buys her favourite flowers or chocolates often.

On her family’s objection to their relationship

The couple tied the knot despite family's objection. She said, “There was no one at my wedding except him. When I told my parents that I wanted to marry him, they did not agree to it. Parents have dreams for their children but the children also have dreams of their own. And sometimes you should let them realise their dreams. At the end of the day, it's their life that they need to live.” Bhagyashree even choked up while talking about the same.

Objection to people saying she eloped to get married

She still says that she did not ‘run away to get married’. “Jo log and media kehte haina ki maine bhaag ke shaadi ki, usse bahut bahut gussa aata hai mujhe kyuki maine bhaag ke shadi nahi ki (When people and the media says that I ran away to get married, I feel so, so angry. Because I didn't),” she said.

Performing together on Smart Jodi

After a romantic performance together, Bhagyashree said, “It felt good to perform together mostly because we performed in front of everyone and logon se gaaliyan nahi padi.”
