Guddan's Kanika Mann on her parents opposing to her acting aspirations: My father is very strict, he asked me to quit studies and get married

Guddan Tumse Na Ho Paayega actress Kanika Mann feels the lockdown has come like a blessing in disguise as she is getting time to spend with her family. The actress is currently in her hometown, Panipat in Haryana. Kanika recently spoke to ETimes TV exclusively and revealed what all she is doing during the lockdown. She also shared that her family got emotional when they learnt that she will soon be leaving for Mumbai to begin her shoot. The actress talked about her growing up years and shared that she was very naughty. She also opened up about the difficulties she had to face to be an actress. Kanika faced a tough time convincing her family to let her join the entertainment industry and become an actress. (By Vijaya Tiwari) (Photo: Instagram)

Guddan is taking a leap, how much you are going to miss your onscreen family

I am going to miss my Guddan family a lot. I think for a few days wo hi naam nikalne wale hain mujhse. It happened many times on the sets. It was an amazing connection. I am going to miss them a lot but we have to be practical and get back to work. (Photo: Instagram)

On Guddan's shoot

I am in my hometown Panipat but I have been asked to return to Mumbai soon. But I am not too sure when the actual shoot will begin. There are a few guidelines I know of that the crew will have fewer people, we will have to take precautions while doing make-up or may be actors can be asked to do their own makeup. We will try our best possible ways to be safe. I am not too sure when the shoot will begin. We have not received any official information about resuming the shoots. But I want it to resume soon so that I can receive all the love from our fans at the earliest. (Photo: Instagram)

You are scared of your dad so how did you convince him to let you be an actress?

It was very difficult to convince my father and I wasn't sure if he would ever agree to it. I knew that my father would never agree to it. So initially I thought of pursuing it without his knowledge and wanted to hide from him. But this couldn't have lasted for long. It was something that I could have never hidden from him as it would have come on TV had I not told him. And it happened, I had shot for a music video without his knowledge and he saw it on TV and came to know about it. He was very angry and there was a lot of drama at home. My father asked me to leave my studies and said he will get me married as I was not listening to him. He asked me to return home. In my family not many have stepped out of the city (Panipat) and my relatives actually said that we had sent you to Chandigarh and you are defaming us by doing such things. Such was the typical mindset. It was a difficult phase. But now my father's doubts are clear. And if someone speaks anything against me, then he makes them understand why and what I am doing. Yes he is now very supportive. (Photo: Instagram)

How difficult it was to survive in Mumbai and find work?

It was difficult. When I was doing music videos at that time I was also contacted by many coordinators. But I was in two minds because my family wasn't happy with my decision. My parents wanted me to become a judge as I was a law student. My parents had out-rightly said no but somewhere I wanted to do it. My father would call my mother and ask us to return but I somehow managed to give my mock test. My mother would always get angry on me as my father was upset with me working in the industry. So it was a tough time. I had to concentrate on my auditions and also face their anger. (Photo: Instagram)

My father has started supporting me now

He is very supportive of my profession now and he keeps a tab on what is to be posted on my social media accounts. There are times that I am not serious about a few things but he is more concerned about it. My father was more worried for my shoots and he is taking care of it now. I feel really nice. My parents are very proud of my achievements but they have never said it in front of me. My parents keep motivating me. (Photo: Instagram)

My relatives have issues with my profession and they look at it in a very negative light

It was difficult to convince my parents but they are happy now. But I have heard that my relatives are not happy with the choice of my field. I get to hear from my cousins about some of my relatives talking about my profession and how I would be getting work or any compromise is being done. So it is not nice. My next target is to make them understand that those who work hard get good work. (Photo: Instagram)

Reservations on doing boles roles

I am not open to wearing bikini on-screen or lovemaking scenes. Right now I am not comfortable with this. I will say no right now. I am not open to doing it. My parents would not want to see me in such scenes. My father was not happy seeing me dance on screen. I have done 70-80 music videos and haven't danced in any of them. (Photo: Instagram)

Does link-up rumours with Nishant Malkani affect your friendship?

I haven't heard rumours as such but yes friends would tease because both off screen and on screen chemistry between us is good. Since I was new to the field, I was scared initially of Nishant and had apprehensions but he is very supportive and we have an amazing chemistry. These rumours have not affected our friendship. Cousins would ask me and tease me by taking Nishant's name. (Photo: Instagram)

On life during the lockdown

I haven't learnt anything new during this lockdown. I have started exercising and was not a book lover but I have started reading books. I tried making dance videos. I am not doing anything different but yes am definitely helping my parents. My brother and sister are younger to me so I help them with their studies. (Photo: Instagram)

You shot for a music video recently during lockdown- how was it?

I was super excited about the music video. We had been doing work from home as we had shot a few episodes for Guddan too. I have been doing photoshoots. It was an amazing shoot with proper make up. It was really different from earlier shoots. There were only 15 people on the sets and it had to be wrapped up at the earliest. (Photo: Instagram)

Childhood memories

I was a very naughty child. There were certain things that my father didn't like for e.g he didn't like me participating in extra curricular activities as he felt it diverted your mind from studies. I am really scared of my father and I would always listen to him. There are certain things if my father doesn't like then I would never do it. I will never listen to my mom but I am really scared of my dad. I was always expected to come first but there were a few children who were genuinely good in studies then what I would do is steal their books or notebooks before exams thinking how he would come first. I would also tear their notebook. (Photo: Instagram)
