From Kunal Kamra, Samay Raina to Kapil Sharma; A look at Comedians who got mired into legal trouble due to their satire

Comedy has always thrived on pushing the rules, but in India, it frequently walks a fine line between freedom of speech and public indignation. Nobody epitomises this better than Kunal Kamra, whose biting political satire has regularly placed him in hot water. And he isn't alone. Several Indian comedians, including Kamra and burgeoning talents like Samay Raina, have experienced strong criticism, legal issues, or public condemnation for their work throughout the years. Whether it's a sarcastic poke at major officials or offhand remarks that offend certain communities, these examples demonstrate how quickly humour can generate national conversations.

Here's a look at some of the most high-profile incidents surrounding Indian comedians, which highlight the obstacles and risks that come with being unapologetic.

2/8

Kunal Kamra

Kunal Kamra, known for his biting political commentary, got himself in hot water once more after altering a popular Hindi song to refer to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as a "gaddar" (traitor). Members of Shinde's Shiv Sena group were outraged by the jab and vandalised Mumbai's Habitat Comedy Club in retaliation. The club momentarily shut down due to safety concerns. An FIR was filed against Kamra, and political figures, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, demanded an apology. The event rekindled debates over whether satire has limitations.

3/8

Samay Raina

Comedian Samay Raina sparked outrage when an episode of his show "India's Got Latent" went viral for all the wrong reasons. Guest Ranveer Allahbadia asked an inappropriate question about a contestant's parents, causing anger. Police complaints were filed, and Allahbadia was summoned, with his passport confiscated. The issue was taken to Parliament, resulting in significant discussions about controlling online content. Raina later withdrew the show's episodes and expressed his willingness to cooperate with authorities.

4/8

Munawar Faruqui

Munawar Faruqui's brush with scandal began in 2021, when he was detained in Indore on charges of making obscene comments about Hindu deities and Amit Shah—despite assurances that the jokes were never spoken. The outrage resulted in performance cancellations and renewed free speech debates.

Munawar drew criticism again in 2024, after winning Bigg Boss 17, for making an offhand joke regarding Konkani people during a crowd-work session in Taloja. The social media outrage drove him to issue an apology, admitting his insensitivity.

5/8

Tanmay Bhatt

Tanmay Bhat, AIB's co-founder, got into trouble in 2016 after a Snapchat video leaked in which he used facial filters to resemble legends such as APJ Abdul Kalam, Sachin Tendulkar, and Lata Mangeshkar. Many perceived it as rude, causing public outcry. This, together with AIB's infamous roast event and the subsequent #MeToo crisis, contributed to the group's demise.

6/8

Kapil Sharma

Kapil Sharma, who is normally recognised for his clean comedy, has not been without controversy. In 2016, he faced criticism for making sexist statements regarding women in government posts. Later, his public feud with co-star Sunil Grover, in which Kapil allegedly screamed obscenities mid-flight, tarnished his reputation and caused a brief career decline.

7/8

Kiku Sharda

Kiku Sharda, popularly known as Palak on 'Comedy Nights With Kapil,' was apprehended and sent to Haryana after a police complaint (January 1) was made against him for mimicking the self-proclaimed Godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. He was charged with allegedly offending Singh's followers' religious sensibilities during a New Year's ritual televised on December 27, 2015. A group of officers arrived on the set of 'Comedy Nights With Kapil'. The team attempted to seek bail, but the FIR required that he report to Kathali (Haryana).

8/8

Vir Das

In 2021, Vir Das ignited a political uproar with his "Two Indias" monologue at Washington's Kennedy Centre. While some appreciated his forthright assessment of India's paradoxes, others accused him of hurting the country's image abroad. Legal objections and calls for an apology quickly followed, establishing his place among the comedians who routinely balance humour with controversy.
