From Kirron Kher to Hina Khan: TV celebrities who fought and survived cancer

Facing a cancer diagnosis requires immense strength, especially under the public eye. These brave television stars shared their difficult journeys with transparency and grace, using their platforms to spread awareness and hope. By documenting their treatments and emotions, they inspired millions of fans worldwide. Their stories prove that resilience and a positive mindset can make a difference. Here’s a look at their incredible battles.

2/7

Kirron Kher

Veteran actor and 'India’s Got Talent' judge Kirron Kher was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, in 2021. She underwent extensive treatment while continuing her professional and political responsibilities.

Kirron told ETimes, “It’s not the ideal situation to be in. Par yeh zindagi hai. One learns to deal with it and carry on.” She added, “Nobody likes going through the treatment or its side effects.” Notably, she even inaugurated an oxygen plant virtually from her hospital bed, proving that positivity and purpose can aid healing even when immunity is compromised.

3/7

Hina Khan

Hina Khan, who rose to superstardom as Akshara in 'Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai', revealed her Stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis in 2024. She emphasised the importance of listening to one’s body.

Speaking to ETimes, she said, “We need to listen to our bodies; they give us signals. I didn’t have a lump, so this was a signal.” Urging people to remain vigilant, she added, “We all get different kinds of signals… we have to understand that kuch toh galat hai.” Despite her diagnosis, Hina continues to work and attend events, sparking a global conversation around early detection and resilience.

4/7

Vibhu Raghave

Vibhu Raghave rose to fame as Saurav in 'Nisha Aur Uske Cousins'. In 2022, he was diagnosed with rare Stage 4 neuroendocrine colon cancer. He documented his aggressive treatments on social media, often with a constant smile. Vibhu shared with ETimes, “I try to make the most of each day I have now. The illness cannot stop me from dreaming big.”

He admitted that he once asked God why this had happened to him. However, he added, “There is so much love and effort coming from friends and family that it helps me keep my spirits high.” Every night, he visualised his dreams turning into reality despite his tough battle.

5/7

Chhavi Mittal

Chhavi Mittal, known for her roles in 'Tumhari Disha' and 'Krishnadasi', discovered she had breast cancer after a gym injury led to a biopsy. She handled the diagnosis with remarkable mental strength.

She told ETimes, “Breast cancer can be cured if detected early. My scars are my medals of honour.” When her doctor asked to see her, she immediately asked, “Do I have cancer?” She even chose to attend a script meeting before the appointment, telling her husband, “We will stick to our schedule and meet the doctor after a day or two.” Today, Chhavi actively educates women about self-examination and early diagnosis.

6/7

Deepika Kakkar

Deepika Kakkar, who won hearts as Simar in 'Sasural Simar Ka,' recently spoke about health and resilience on Bharti Singh’s podcast. Encouraging her fans to stay strong during difficult times, she said, “I know so many people are dealing with situations far more serious than mine. Choose life. Choose happiness.”

She believes in facing every hurdle with faith, adding, “Face everything with strength, and hold on to your faith in God. That’s all.” While Deepika maintains a healthy lifestyle, her message focuses on mental strength and the power of choosing positivity.

7/7

Dolly Sohi

Dolly Sohi, best known for her lead roles in 'Bhabhi' and 'Jhanak', battled cervical cancer with immense courage while raising her daughter. She initially ignored her symptoms for months until the pain became unbearable.

Dolly told ETimes, “I have no other choice but to stay strong. If I feel weak, then it would get weaker with the treatment too.” She shared her diagnosis publicly to feel “light and energetic.” She later added, “Initially, I was in a terrible state and didn’t feel like talking to anyone. Later, I gathered myself and healed from it.” Sadly, Dolly passed away in 2024.
