From getting Rs 14 lakh to start Boogie Woogie to refusing to sell sad stories of contestants; Javed, Naved Jaaferi and Ravi Behl recall how the dance reality show was born

In a heartfelt conversation on Farah Khan’s cooking vlog, Javed Jaaferi, Naved Jaaferi, and Ravi Behl recalled how Boogie Woogie was born. From casually conceiving the idea to securing Rs 14 lakh in funding, the trio shared behind-the-scenes stories of how India’s first dance reality show came to life. They also emphasized their commitment to keeping the show organic and talent-focused, avoiding emotional exploitation while creating an 18-year legacy.

The Idea Was Born Casually

Ravi Behl recalled, “Ek din ghar pe baetha hua tha. Naved called, he would drop by every day. He said let’s do something. He said let’s make a dance show. All three of us are dancers. That was the most obvious thing to do. We wrote the concept in two pages. Boogie Woogie was my favourite song.” What started as a casual chat soon turned into a pioneering concept.

The First Approval and Rs 14 Lakh Funding

Naved shared, “There was one small cabin with two rooms. We met someone, showed him the concept and he gave the green signal.” But it was after a year that real progress happened. “I cancelled a trip after getting a call. All three of us went. He gave us a cheque of Rs 14 lakh and told us to start the episode.” That moment officially launched Boogie Woogie.

The Pilot Almost Didn’t Work

The first pilot almost faced rejection. “We made the episode, but it wasn’t up to the mark. We were about to leave with our tape when Sudesh Iyer called us back. He saw it for five minutes and said, ‘Superhit hai show, done, let’s go,’” Naved recalled. That greenlight changed everything and set Boogie Woogie on its successful path.

18 Years of Boogie Woogie

The show went on to become one of India’s longest-running reality shows. Ravi said, “For 12 years it ran continuously. In between there were breaks for 1-2 years.” Javed added, “For two seasons, it ran for 52 weeks and then it was twice a week.” Their passion and commitment made Boogie Woogie a cultural phenomenon for nearly two decades.

6/7

No Sad Stories, Only Real Talent

Ravi emphasized, “There was a requirement to sell sad stories; we would only focus on real stories.” The trio chose to highlight contestants' dancing skills rather than exploit personal struggles. “We would eat food that the contestants’ mothers would bring. The show would be on, and we would be eating. It was very organic,” he added, sharing how genuine warmth defined the show’s environment.

A Legacy Still Remembered

Even after 18 years, Boogie Woogie remains close to fans' hearts. Their honest, simple approach and respect for contestants’ dignity created a show that stood apart. Their casual idea, nurtured with sincerity, passion, and creativity, grew into an iconic show that inspired generations of dancers and reality shows in India.
