Nancy Guthrie case update: What we know about the person detained for questioning

If there’s one case that has had the United States of America, as well as the world, gripped in the past few days, it’s the Nancy Guthrie disappearance case. Everyone’s watching as the cops are relentless in their search for her. Nancy Guthrie is 84, the mother of Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, and she vanished from her Tucson home on January 31, 2026. The case has only grown more urgent—now there’s someone in custody for questioning, new security footage, ransom notes, and some heartbreaking pleas from the Guthrie family. Here’s what’s actually known right now, with all the noise stripped away.

How it all began: Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance

After vanishing from home on January 31, Nancy didn’t show up for church the day after, which set off alarms for her family right away. As reported by E! News, Savannah Guthrie revealed that her mom wasn’t someone who could just disappear — she had trouble getting around and needed daily medication. So when her family couldn’t reach her, it made things feel even more serious.

Meanwhile, right from the start, the cops treated this like a crime. They found blood on her porch. They even found that someone had tampered with the doorbell camera. These details made it clear: something bad happened.

The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Office jumped in quickly. They set up a command post in Tucson and asked the public to share any tips — no matter how small.

Latest update: All about the person who’s been detained

After days of limited leads, Tuesday night brought a big shift in the case. As reported by AP News, police stopped a car in Rio Rico, south of Tucson, and took someone in for questioning. They haven’t yet revealed if this person is the same one seen on the surveillance video, the one caught messing with Nancy’s camera the night she disappeared.

As of now, officials have shared that this person might have information, but they aren’t calling them a suspect yet. No charges have been filed yet, and the FBI investigators are still asking anyone with leads to come forward.

The surveillance footage: What’s in it

After days of her disappearance and not many clues, FBI investigators finally got hold of a video from Nancy’s doorbell camera, even though someone tried to mess it up. The footage, released by the FBI, shows a masked figure—ski mask, backpack, what looks like a holster—creeping around Nancy’s porch the night she went missing. The person blocks the camera, moves around like they’re searching for something. It’s the first real break in the case.

FBI Director Kash Patel put the images out there, asking people to take a good look at them. And if anyone has any information, they’ve been urged to come forward with that — any bit of info might help.

Ransom demands and dead ends

Not long after Nancy disappeared, there were ransom notes that started popping up: some sent to the family, some to the press. The demands were for cryptocurrency, mostly Bitcoin, with strict deadlines and big sums of money attached.

At least one of these notes demanded millions in Bitcoin and laid out two deadlines: Pay USD 4 million by Thursday, February 5, or else. That date came and went. The next demand upped the ante to USD 6 million, with a new deadline — on Monday, February 9. Per People, no payment happened, and as far as anyone could tell, the family didn’t confirm if they paid or not.

Nobody could be sure if the ransom notes were legit.

Where things stand now

After weeks, there’s still no verified contact between the family and anyone claiming to have Nancy. The ransom notes, demanding millions in Bitcoin, haven’t led anywhere. No one knows if they’re real or just someone trying to cash in on the chaos.

However, the FBI’s not giving up. They’re offering a USD 50,000 reward for any information that brings Nancy home or leads to an arrest. For now, though, the trail is still cold, and the Guthrie family, along with everyone watching, is left waiting for real answers.

The family’s pleas

As for the Guthrie family, since the disappearance of their 84-year-old mother, ‘Today’ show personality Savannah Guthrie and her siblings have been all over social media. They keep posting tearful videos, begging for any information, or just a sign that their mom’s okay.

Savannah Guthrie has been posting videos on Instagram, pleading with the public and whoever took her mother. She and her siblings, Annie and Cameron, even tried to speak directly to the kidnappers, begging to get their mother back, saying they’re willing to pay for her return.

In one post, Savannah called this an “hour of desperation” and pleaded with whoever has her mother to reach out.

"We believe our mom is still out there," she said. "We need your help. Law enforcement is working tirelessly around the clock, trying to bring her home, trying to find her. She was taken and we don’t know where. And we need your help."

In another video shared on Saturday, February 7, Savannah, along with her siblings, Annie and Cameron, seemed to speak directly to their mother's kidnappers.

"We received your message and we understand," Savannah said. "We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”
