To prevent students from going on spring break, the University of California, Davis, has come up with an interesting offer. The college has decided to offer $75 grants to students who decide to stay inside the university campus. The grant can be redeemed for supplies in four categories, Get Active, Get Artsy, Home Improvement, and Let's Stay In. Read less
UC Davis chancellor Gary May said the response to the grant has been truly awesome so far. It has been noticed that spring holidaymakers have already begun to flock to beach destinations in Florida and Texas. The vacationers have been seen without masks or adhering to physical distancing which is not a good thing considering the number of cases have gone up.
A CDC spokesperson said, "[The] CDC recommends that people not travel at this time, and delay spring break travel until 2022. Even for those who are vaccinated, it is important to avoid travel to decrease the chance of spreading COVID-19 to others."
The campus community updated: "Response was overwhelming, so much so that we boosted the number of grants from 500 to 750 and now 2,000 (at least)!" The chancellor also said that one-third of the grant recipients have decided to use their $75 in the Home Improvement category.
He further said, "I am eager to hear about what these students and the other grant recipients are doing. We will be checking in with them and will let you know what we learn." To receive the grant, applicants need to offer their spring break plans, commit to staying in town along with taking a COVID-19 test.
The campus has reported 504 positive cases since September 2020.
