Gujarat: Sudarshan Setu, India's longest cable-stayed bridge inaugurated by PM Modi

The inauguration of Sudarshan Setu by Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a significant milestone for infrastructure development in India. With a total length of 2.32 kilometers, Sudarshan Setu is now India’s longest cable-stayed bridge. The bridge spans the distance between the Okha mainland and Beyt Dwarka in Gujarat.

What sets Sudarshan Setu apart is not just its impressive length but also its unique design elements. The inclusion of a footpath adorned with verses from the Bhagavad Gita and images of Lord Krishna adds a cultural and spiritual dimension to the bridge. This design choice not only showcases India's rich cultural heritage but also offers a serene and contemplative experience for those crossing the bridge.

Moreover, Sudarshan Setu is not just a bridge for transportation but also a step towards sustainability. By generating one megawatt of electricity, the bridge contributes to reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy solutions.



With a width of 27.20 meters and footpaths measuring 2.50 meters on both sides, the bridge ensures safe passage for pedestrians and vehicles alike. Its strategic location connecting Okha mainland with Beyt Dwarka, an island near the Okha port, is of particular importance. Beyt Dwarka is approximately 30 kilometers from Dwarka town, which is famous for the Dwarkadhish Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Formerly known as the 'Signature Bridge', the structure has been renamed 'Sudarshan Setu', reflecting its significance and the cultural ethos of the region.



Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ahead of the bridge's inauguration, emphasized on the bridge's role in enhancing connectivity and facilitating development in the region. Prior to its construction, pilgrims relied on boat transport to reach the Dwarkadhish Temple. The bridge is viewed as a solution to the villagers' problems and is part of PM Modi's 'Viksit Bharat' vision for development. Initiated by the Centre in 2017, the Sudarshan Setu bridge aims to alleviate commuting challenges for devotees traveling between Okha and Bet Dwarka.

Expected to enhance tourism, save time, and improve access to quality healthcare, the Sudarshan Setu holds promise for the region. Additionally, PM Modi is set to inaugurate various projects in Jamnagar, Devbhumi Dwarka, and Porbandar districts, including the electrification of a 533-km railway line and the inauguration of offshore pipelines at Vadinar under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
