As per the reports, a large number of adventure enthusiasts scale mountains, and go trekking in the district. Referring to this, Kinnaur DC Apoorv Devgan stated that the climate, however, changes during the onset and peak of winters which pose threat to the lives of trekkers. He added that conducting search operations during such extreme conditions to find the missing trekkers also turns risky.
The said decision to ban mountaineering and trekking activities across the district was taken after 10 trekkers, and three tourists from Mumbai on their way from Rohru to Sangla, died enroute. Reportedly, search to find two missing trekkers is still on.
As per the reports, three trekkers lost their lives recently following heavy snowfall in the district and 10 rescued. This was informed by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, adding that a rescue operation is still underway.
Reports further state that tourists –1 from Delhi and 12 from Mumbai–were going to Sangla in Kinnaur from Janglik in Shimla. They started their trek from Rohru to Burua village on October 17, but were stranded near Burua Kanda top due to bad weather conditions and heavy snowfall.
Reportedly, several areas of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh have been battered with snow-covered conditions over the past week.
