Nepal tourism department held an informal meeting where officials discussed shifting the base camp of Mt Everest. Though nothing is decided yet nor the new base has been identified. A number of researchers have warned the country that the glaciers near the Everest summit are melting at an alarming rate.
For those who don’t know, Himalayan glaciers are very important as they contribute significantly towards water resources for millions in South Asia. In February this year, researchers in Nepal had warned the highest glacier on the top of Mount Everest could just vanish by the middle of this century. This will happen because the 2000-year-old ice cap on Everest is thinning rapidly.
The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) also said that Everest has been losing ice since the late 1990s. It has been estimated that the ice in the South Cole glacier at a height of 8020 m is thinning at a rate of nearly two-metre per year.
Therefore, it’s imperative for Nepal to find a new base camp.
