A notification from the government reads, “In a bid to preserve the marine ecosystem of both the lakes, the new policy aims to regulate the functioning of houseboats moored in Dal and Nigeen lakes by adopting the models of sustainable and responsible tourism.”
According to the approved design of the Lakes and Waterways Development Authority, the houseboats need to be fitted with bio-digesters for scientific treatment of solid and liquid waste. These must also be properly equipped with fire safety equipment, along with trained staff verified by the Fire and Emergency Services department.
The policy further lays down regulations for facilities such as kitchen, lodging, first-aid and electricity among others. It further ensures availability of minimum basic facilities to the tourists.
Dal and Nigeen lakes are two of the most prominent lakes in Kashmir. Besides being popular for their natural beauty, these lakes are celebrated for their shikara rides or houseboats, which is a lifetime's experience.
