Israel has introduced a device that will exempt Israleis coming home from other countries from going to a quarantine hotel. The new option is wearing a tracking bracelet that will notify authorities if a person violates the rules of isolation period. The program started on Monday at the Ben Gurion Airport in Israel, where 100 tracking systems were installed. Read less
The step was taken after a drastic drop in passenger traffic was reported due to COVID-19 imposed restrictions in the country. Incoming passengers were forced to quarantine at the hotels for up to two weeks. Though everything was paid for by the government, people did not like the idea of being forced into something.
The new tracking system will save people from going into unwanted quarantine and will also keep authorities informed about the whereabouts of the person. If someone chooses to wear the bracelet, they can self-isolate at home. The system includes one waterproof electronic bracelet, a smartphone and a wall-mounted tracker.
The system will alert the authorities immediately if the person removes the bracelet or travels too far from the home monitor.
SuperCom, the firm behind the technology, said, "There is potential for the pilot to quickly expand into a project consisting of thousands of units for more wide scale use to assist in quarantine compliance in Israel."
Since the introduction of the system, several incoming passengers have opted to wear the bracelet instead of staying at a hotel.
