Things to know before you goTop five tips for navigating Delhi

Word to the wise: When hailing an auto or cycle rickshaw, it's likely the driver will refuse to use the meter. If so, make sure you agree a fare before you depart to avoid arguments later.

A single rickshaw journey across Delhi can age a passenger several years, while a trip to a train station is something you'll never forget. Navigate the city with (a little) more ease with these simple tips:

1. Always carry small notes for rickshaws (INR 10, 20 and 50 notes are best); drivers will generally not have change.

2. If you're in the city for more than a couple of days invest in an Eicher map - it'll help you get your bearings.

3. Avoid the rush hour; it can double the travel time of even a short journey.

4. If heading out of Delhi, book trains online in advance with a credit card at Cleartrip. If you're taking it day-by-day, seek out the tourist office on the first floor of New Delhi Train Station; they hold a 'tourist quota' of tickets for long-distance trains that have booked out in advance.

5. On the metro, ladies should make the most of the 'women only' carriages (more space, less staring). There are two on each train.
