The Lac Blanc or White Lake is situated 2352 m above sea level in Chamonix. The scenery is so breathtaking that one might be tempted to set up camp right there. This is also one of the more popular treks or trails up the slopes of the Aiguilles Rouges. This trail offers mind-blowing views across the Mont Blanc and other gorgeous peaks in the Alps. It is a serious trek and needs preparation, and being one of the popular trails, it gets very crowded during high season. So it is best advised to begin early morning. The views of the Mont Blanc are best early morning or late in the day so it makes sense to stay at the refuge at the top. They only house around 20 so it is important to book in advance. There is a tame ibex at the refuge house, so keep a lookout. This trek can be started from three points, the Index List at the top of Flegere (2525m), the Flégère mid-station (1913m) or Tré-le-Champ just above Argentiere (1417m). While the trek from Index seems the shortest, it has a very steep trail and maybe best suited for experienced hikers. From the Flégère mid-station it is the easiest way up and takes about an hour and a half. The route from Tré-le-Champ is challenging but beautiful in terms of the nature that surrounds you. Snow levels can vary on these routes through the year so it is best to check at the lift station for the recommended route. Once you reach the top, the treat that awaits is complete and perfect silence.
