Hub of the low-cost airlinesWord to the wise: Don't waste money booking private shuttles or taxis to take you into Venice: the blue Eurobuses run regularly and are cheap.
Those familiar with the ways of budget airlines will not be surprised to hear that in Venice such companies don't use the close and convenient Marco Polo airport but rather Treviso, situated an unromantic 20 kilometres outside the city.
For the onward journey, your best bet is to catch the blue ATVO Eurobuses. Journeys cost EUR 7 and take approximately 80 minutes, stopping at Venice-Mestre railway station on the mainland before continuing on to Piazzale Roma in Venice central. Tickets are available inside the airport terminal and must be stamped before boarding.
There is also a service called Shuttle Direct, bookable online, which uses shared or private-hire minibuses or cars. The coaches start from EUR 7 but the private hires are very expensive, from EUR 56-112 per person.
Standard taxis can be booked or hired from outside the terminal entrance. Treviso Radio Taxi is the recognised service, and the cost of a journey into Venice is approximately EUR 70.
