Phnom Penh is an ancient city that over two millions people call home. Although not typically listed as a “must see” in an average backpacker tour route or in Southeast Asian guidebooks, it is thriving with light, colour and action unlike any other city. Not being on the tourist circuit makes Phnom Penh special. There are memorials, temples and palaces standing tall throughout the landscape, showing the history of this ancient empire. Woven around these grand landmarks are the local markets, laneways and every-day people and activities that make the city truly special. Phnom Penh is subtle and a great place for those looking for something more to explore. It’s the kind of city that requires visitors to look beyond the heat, the dust and the traffic. Just below the surface is a magical city so often overlooked and well worth the visit.
