Mumbai to Alibaug Ro-Ro car ferry service will finally start operating from the end of this month. This has been confirmed by the officials from Mumbai Port Trust. The Ro-Ro, or the roll-on, roll-off ferry service will be around 14 km long connecting Ferry Wharf in Mumbai’s Mazgaon to Mandwa. Once this Ro-Ro car ferry service starts from Mumbai to Alibaug, it will cut travel time from three to four hours via road to barely an hour. As per the reports, these ferries will be capable of transporting 50-100 cars (including full-sized luxury buses), and up to 500 passengers.
Captain Karkare speaking about this development said, “It will cover the distance between Mumbai in 45 minutes, making 6-8 trips per day. Another important aspect of this ferry service is that unlike Mumbai-Alibaug passenger ferry that stops running during the monsoon season, the Ro-Ro car ferry service will stay operational during rains too, except the time when tides are riding too high.”

The vessel, which is being built for the ferry service, will come equipped with comfortable air-conditioned seating, a viewing deck, and a refreshment lounge. As of now, only one vessel will be used for the service, and there is all likelihood of adding another vessel in the coming months.
Price for tickets has not been finalised yet; however, as per the reports, movement of per vehicle will cost around INR 500. This is, however, not the first ever Ro-Ro car ferry service to start in India. There are several services that operate particularly around the coast, such as in Konkan (Dabhol-Dhopave and Dapoli-Bankot), Goa, and Kerala.
