In simple black and white, it’s Fancy Bazar but colloquially this huge market area is called Faasi Bazar and this is what you should tell your cabbie or auto rickshaw driver if you want to avoid any confusion! The market has several commercial complexes and big showrooms but it is a heaven for street shopping buffs who love to go store hopping and vendor hopping hunting for that perfect buy at the perfect bargain rate! A bit cramped up like every other Indian street market, Fancy Bazar is the place you should visit if you want to get some real good deals in locally produced souvenirs.Enter the market through any of the narrow lanes from the main road and get ready to be a part of all the frenzy and buzz right from the word ‘go’. The streets have specific stores for tribal jewelry, wooden stuffs, artificial flowers, wind chimes, hand bags, soft toys, decoration items, clothing items and footwear. Ethnic Assamese showpieces like the signature Jaapi (a round headgear made from bamboo and decorated with intricate designs) and Gamosa (thin cotton towel with elaborate knitting work on the edges) are two things you should not miss out on. If you want to buy the famous Assamese silk made Mekhela Chador, Fancy Bazar is the place with numerous silk shops and showrooms.
