Bordered between the Wardha River and the Penganga Rivers, lies the Ushakothi (Badrama) Wildlife Sanctuary—another hidden treasure of Odisha. The small town of Ushakothi that lies in close proximity has given its name to this sanctuary. The Hirakud Dam lies on the western part of the sanctuary and is another place that should be made a beeline for. The sanctuary is located roughly 40 kilometres from Sambalpur, spread over an area of more than 300 square kilometers, this was earmarked as a sanctuary in 1962. The dense deciduous forest of the area comprises trees like Neem, Acacia Sandalwood, Arjun, Sal and Casuarinas. Apart from the Asian elephants which happens to be the prized inhabitant, the sanctuary is home to panthers, tigers, spotted deer, wild boar, snakes and hyenas. Other animals that are found in the sanctuary include racket-tailed drongos and flying squirrels. Capture the beauty of the wilderness in your camera lenses atop the two watchtowers or take a safari to explore the deep interiors. You could also stay at the forest bungalow that is located inside the premises, if you are able to book it well in advance.
