Thattekere is a hidden lake about 60 kms from Bangalore, towards south beyond Bannerghatta National Park. It is very unlikely that this place gets listed as a destination to visit ex-Bangalore, but this lesser explored and scenic destination is certainly worth a short visit.Thatte means plate in Kannada. Probably the lake got its name from its circular shape. Thattekere has one big lake, a small temple of Mahadeeshwara, a few watch towers nearby and lots of birds. One needs to park vehicles on the main road and walk on foot for about a km to reach Thattekere lake. Lots of birds can be spotted in the area-thanks to its serenity and isolation- mainly Lapwings, Bee Eaters, Kites, storks and Kingfishers. Do carry good equipments for bird watching and photography. Late looks amazing in early morning hours, so be sure to reach there in time for sunrise.
There’re lots of electric fencing in the area hints at possible intrusions by wild animals- mainly elephants. Do keep an eye for them and do not venture deeper into the forest.
Thattekere can be reached both via Bannerghatta road and Kanakapura road. Do carry food and water as no facilities are available nearby. Bheemeshwari and Bannerghatta National Park are the nearby attractions that can possibly be clubbed with Thattekere visit if you have time.
