Yet another extravagant department store in the heart of Kyoto, Takashimaya has forever been a fierce competitor of the shopping giant Daimaru, and has often emerged victorious with its collection of Japanese souvenirs and restaurants. Established sometime in the 19th Century, it is one of the biggest luxury chains in the country. Standing tall on Shijo Dori, the plaza is beautiful to look at, perhaps the reason why it is a tourist destination in itself and can unfortunately burn a hole in your pocket with its fare. However, if money is not much of an issue, the ceramics, tableware, paintings, and kimonos available at Takashimaya are the best of the lot and their collection of local cosmetics is also quite exciting. International clothing brands like Burberry, Moschino, Diesel, Armani, Hermes, and Max Mara, among others, are also available for splurging. The seventh floor of Takashimaya is dedicated to fine dining in the form of Italian, French and Japanese cuisines, and once you’re done indulging yourself, do not forget to get your tax refund from the first floor if your purchase exceeds 5000 Yen. Moreover, certain shops offer a 5 percent discount to foreign visitors, and you must absolutely make full use of the same. The store attendants can speak English, and will eagerly guide you around. The arcade is open to visitors from 10 am till 8 pm.
