A moving symbol of India’s capital
Word to the wise: Political demonstrations are often held in this area; exercise caution if a group has gathered.
The city's most iconic monument and symbol, India Gate - designed by British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris - is a defining structure of Delhi's modern history. Located in the absolute centre of the city - on Rajpath, a ceremonial boulevard that links Rashtrapati Bhavan (the President's residence) to India Gate - this memorial was built for the Indian soldiers who were killed in World War I. In respect of this there is an eternal flame here that burns for all who fell.
