It is hard to miss the advertisements for ‘elephant interactions’ at every bend on the road in the small town of Kumily. In fact some of these also have elephant rides on the road itself. Apart from the Periyar National Park, this activity is one of the most popular ones for families. Everybody find this to be a big lure whether they are foreign travellers who want a tryst of rides on the pachyderm or children who find it fascinating to sit on the ambling animal for a joyride around a small spice plantation. Though the activity leans towards cruelty to animals, use your discretion to indulge in it. Instead of rides, you can feed and bathe animals. Elephant Junction is one of the establishments, where you can book yourself for an afternoon with elephants. Of course, elephant junction is popular for the photo opportunities with the animals. It also works as a tour operator for the national park activities, but these are best booked directly at the Eco Tourism Centre.
