One of the oldest shopping streets in Japan, the Nakamise arcade is dotted with innumerable shops on both sides of the narrow pathway that leads to Sensō-ji, an ancient Buddhist temple in Asakusa, Tokyo. The entrance to the lively market is marked by the enormous vermillion-hued Kaminarimon Gate, which is also a major photo-op for the visitors. The stores here sell everything from the Japanese kimonos, folding fans, wooden dolls, Japanese folk-art products, umbrellas, postcards, traditional sweets and other interesting curios that make for perfect souvenirs. As you stroll through the meandering lanes of this eclectic shopping district, you can pick up some quirky local Japanese trinkets, gorge on a few desserts (like Ningyo-yaki), or simply take in the local flavour of the island by walking around. The city pretty much makes for an ideal walk, while you embrace its culture and living style.
