At an altitude of about 13,700 feet, (4,170 metres) above the sea level, the Sela Pass connects Tawang to the rest of India. The pass is usually covered in snow throughout the year, but is shut only in the winter months. Offering spectacular views of the Himalayas, a hike to the pass is a popular activity amongst travellers to Arunachal Pradesh. It is believed that the pass has 101 lakes around it, which hold religious significance to the Buddhist community. The closest to the pass is Sela Lake (also known as Paradise Lake), which freezes over every winter. While the summer in Sela Pass is not very cold, the temperature can dip down to -10 degree celsius in winter months.
