The gentrified area of Tiong Bahru houses one of the more famous market cum hawker centres. This area filled with pre-war housing has become quite the hipster haven in recent years, with cafes and fancy gastronomical restaurants springing up at every juncture, but Tiong Bahru food centre cum market remains a welcome reprieve from cupcakes and cappuccinos for the residents here. The market is located on the first floor, with the food centre on the second floor, and it is easy to tell the popular stores just by looking at the queues. Some famous food to try here are the Chwee Kueh at Jian Bo Chwee Kueh, a steamed rice cake with a spicy radish dip on top. The Hainanese Chicken Rice at Tiong Bahru Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice stall and the roasted/barbequed pork at the Tiong Bahru Lee Hong Kee Cantonese Roasted stall are also some hot favourites. For noodle lovers, try the lor mee, a noodle dish in thick brown gravy at 178 Lor Mee, Pork Ribs Prawn Noodle or the fried kway teow, a flat noodle dish served up with cockles, fish cake and Chinese sausage at Tiong Bahru Fried Kway Teow.
