SIGHTSEEING, SHEKHAWATI Updated : Jan 12, 2017, 02.04 PM IST

MahansarMahansar, among the locals has the impression of being a Thikana, and is regarded as a historically powerful place. It lies only 15 km away from Ramgarh in Jhunjhunu District. Most of its heritage havelis were constructed by the Poddar family.

Sone ki Dukaan (golden shop) – this was a shop constructed in 1850, the interiors of which are abundantly worked in gold leaf. Paintings on the three vaulted ceilings depict reincarnations of Vishnu, Ramayana, and the life of Krishna, and are some of the finest in the area. Also can be spotted are some Sanskrit shlokas written in real gold leaf.

Raghunath Temple – this is a huge temple, probably the biggest in entire Shekhawati. Mythological paintings are still visible on the outer walls.

Dancing Hall in Tolaram Haveli – an impressive collection of frescos and murals with Belgian chandeliers completing a grand interior, this is splendour. It is a high ceiling skirted by jharokas to enable women of the family to watch the dances and other entertainment programmes. The murals incorporate gold leaf in their intricate designs.

Mahansar Fort – originally built in 1768, Mahansar Fort has since been converted into a heritage hotel and is managed by descendants of the Thakur family.

Mahansar is also famous for the local liquor named Maharani Mahansar, which is made from saunf or aniseed, and is also known to be very potent.

Tourists can stay at Narayan Niwas Castle in Mahansar, in the fort converted hotel.
