With a history of more than 1700 years, Zhujiajiao is an ancient water town located in the suburbs of Shanghai. Tucked between the landscape of lakes and mountains, the water village covers an area of 47 sq km. With the location at an intersection of many waterways and canals, Zhujiajiao was an important trading post. The town was established 1700 years ago during Yuan dynasty and it flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The water village is connected with 36 ancient bridges made from wood, stones or marbles. Built in 1571, Fangsheng Bridge is the longest, largest and tallest stone bridge with five openings. Take a boat and explore the ancient water canals of Zhujiajiao. Do not miss strolling around the ancient streets of this quaint village. The streets are lined with houses from Ming and Qing era. The traditional houses with courtyards extend all the way to the waterfront. It is fascinating to see the residents go about their life leaving the doors of their traditional home wide open. Take a break at one of the tea houses and marvel at this ancient way of living which exists right next to the modern madness of Shanghai.
