Located close enough, but not too close to the city’s popular tourist areas, Hotel Carlton lies perched on the lower part of Nob Hill, and is best known for its eco-friendly nature—energy drawn from solar panels on the roof and sanitation products made of natural components—but has much more to offer guests checking in for a stay. The rooms (there are 161 in all) are decorated in cream and blue with elements of saffron, and most offer unobstructed views of the city. While the façade dates back to the 1920s, the interiors have been given a modern facelift, and the amenities include everything from iPod docking stations to coffee-makers in each room. The lobby on the ground floor welcomes guests with a warm fireplace and an eclectic, well-stocked library, there’s an Arabic restaurant serving fusion cuisine, and hotel guests are offered a complimentary glass of wine every evening.
