A visit to the abandoned village of Jazirat-al-Hamra is a good way to step back in time. Walk around and you’ll see the remains of a traditional town, with its market area and cluster of houses. The buildings, largely constructed from coral stone (the fossil building material originating from the sea) are a sight in themselves. The more attentive you are while walking around, the more details you’ll observe. Elaborate plaster decorations around the walls are as intriguing as the complex nature of the exposed coral. Artistically designed arches illustrate elements of the architecture, typical to the former inhabitants, who benefited from the maritime and pearl-trade practiced here.
