The other identity that New Orleans wears is that of the city of Mardi Gras. A French tradition, it is celebrated on Shrove Tuesday, which is the previous day to Ash Wednesday, and is a celebration like no other. The carnival lasts for two weeks leading up to Shrove Tuesday, and in New Orleans, the people and the organisers pull out all stops to make it a success. Each day is marked by parades with people dressed in outlandish and outrageous clothes. You will find them throwing gifts, chains, doubloons and many other things to bystanders watching the parades.
