As the historic St Charles Avenue streetcar moves uptown, the tracks suddenly pass through beautiful mansions and bungalows which are surrounded by sprawling and lush green gardens. Called the Garden District, possibly because of the profusion of gardens, the name came into being during the 19th century when prominent businessmen and plantation owners built the mansions and laid out the gardens. Apart from St Charles Avenue, other major streets include Magazine Street, Jackson Avenue, Louisiana Street and a few others. Though many of the original lots have been built upon, there are still enough gardens and a profusion of mansions to make it an interesting place to visit. There are even walks to showcase the area.
