Permanent Judicial Museum is the latest entrant to Mumbai’s impressive list of museums. Housed in courtroom no. 17 of the Bombay High Court, the museum tells the story of the evolution of the judicial system in Mumbai. The courtroom has been well restored, and in the backdrop of the gleaming wood are placards informing visitors about the judicial system as it existed in India before the British arrived, the scenario under British rule and how it evolved over the years for the common man, irrespective of race, colour, religion or caste. The museum also tells us of the great Indians who studied and practised law, notable among them were Gandhiji, Dr. Ambedkar and Sardar Patel. There are copies of their Barrister Certificates as well as copies of records listing their appearance in the court. Besides, the museum also shows what a typical courtroom looked like in those days as well as judicial paraphernalia.
