Government Museum, also known as Rajkiya Sangrahalaya, is probably the best place to get an insight into the origin of this ancient city. The museum was founded in 1874 by Sir F. S. Growse, the then collector of Mathura district and was known as Curzon Museum of Archaeology. This museum houses sculptures, paintings, old coins, and other artefacts along with the things discovered by eminent colonial archaeologists like Alexander Cunningham, F. S. Growse, and Fuhrer. Besides, it is renowned for housing ancient sculptures dating from 3rd century BC to 12th century AD. Later in the year 1947, the Indian Government also issued a stamp to celebrate its birthday.
