Located on the banks of the Gomti River on Sitapur Road, Chandrika Devi Temple is an ancient temple from the Ramayana era. This famous shrine is about 28 km away from the main city and has great religious significance. There are several legends attached to the establishment of this temple. The most popular one is related to Lakshmana’s elder son Rajkumar Chandraketu. As per Hindu mythology, once he was riding the Ashwamegh horse in the city and on his way, it got all dark and scary. He then prayed to the goddess for his safety and within a few moments, the goddess appeared and the entire place was flooded with moon light. Later, a temple was built on the spot where the goddess appeared. The presiding deity here is Chandrika Devi who is prayed in the form of a rock having three pindis or heads. Having such religious importance, the temple is visited by a pool of devotees every day; especially during the time of Navratras, which is a prominent Hindu festival.
