Historic public houses and boutique shoppingWord to the wise: This is one of the best areas to stay in the city, as accommodation is well-priced and within easy walking distance of anything you might want to see.
One of the liveliest parts of Edinburgh, Grassmarket is also one of its most interesting areas. From the 15th to the 20th century, the square at the street's heart was the main setting for public executions, as well as the city’s biggest cattle market, although it was probably best known for its huge number of pubs – a reputation it maintains today.
Walk through Grassmarket and you’ll find dozens of charismatic Victorian public houses – from family-friendly gastro pubs to more traditional local establishments – situated side-by-side, offering a well-deserved break from the hustle and bustle of the Royal Mile.
This is also an excellent area for independent shopping. Grassmarket itself has an abundance of vintage shops and boutiques, while nearby Cockburn and Victoria streets between them offer antiques and some of the best spots to pick up quality locally-produced tweed, tartan or cashmere.
