Merdeka Square

Merdeka Square literally means Independence Square. It is a historical venue where the Malaysian independence was declared in 1957. Towering at a height of 100 meters, the flagpole holding the flag of Malaysia in the centre is the highest flagpole in the world. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building, the Royal Selangor Club and St. Mary’s Anglican Cathedral line this huge public square. They are the few remaining signs of the British past of Malaysia. During the colonial times, the square was used as a cricket field. Now the Merdeka Square is a great hangout place for locals as well as tourists. The square is a venue for many rock concerts and an annual Merdeka Parade to celebrate the Independence Day. Walk around this charming lush green square and marvel at its historical colonial surroundings. The relentless modernity against the colonial past is quite contrasting. The food courts at Plaza Putra shopping complex located underneath the old cricket pitch is a great place for eating after the stroll around the square.
