Standing witness to great historical gatherings that took place within its walls, the Town Hall is a majestic building in the heart of Kolkata. Designed in a Palladian style by French military engineer Colonel Gastin, the Town Hall was opened to the public in 1814—the money for its construction being gathered through a public lottery. Currently the building is in the midst of restoration and houses a museum called Kolkata Panorama as well as a library on Calcutta started with the personal collection of Mr. P.T. Nair, a barefoot historian and researcher. The Museum is separated into 19 enclaves and provides an insight into the cultural richness of the city including the social and tumultuous freedom movement.
