SIGHTSEEING, KARGIL Updated : Dec 21, 2016, 03.33 PM IST

bardan
The 17th century established Drukpa monastery of Bardan is spectacularly located on a rocky crag just above the road on Tsarap Chu river. It is 7 km away from Padum and is accessed by a motorable road on the way to Raru.

It is a stunning sight to see this whitewashed building constructed on a rock that rises almost 100 m. directly from the river. The dukhang inside Bardan monastery is decorated with murals which seem to be well preserved. The monastery is said to have been established by Deva Gtayso. There is a statue of Maitreya inside the monastery, which houses 30 monks. Stakna gompa of Indus Valley in Ladakh takes care of proceedings and the masked dance festival of Bardan monastery.
