The first thing that strikes you about the Royal Palace or Kraton is that it is a palace of living traditions as well as splendid art and architecture. Built in the 18th century, it is still the residence of the royal family and looks like a small town with over 1000 people employed by the royalty as court guards staying here. I saw a huge hall filled with gamelan, ready for an orchestra. There are several pavilions here but the golden pavilion took my breath away. There is a small museum that showcases the history as well. Meanwhile, there are shops galore where you can buy souvenirs. You will need at least half a day to completely soak yourself in this cultural landscape.
