India's premier air traffic hubNoteworthy for: The newly-refurbished airport boasts a spa and the nation's best duty-free shopping. Be watchful of your luggage, however, as multiple airlines use the same belts at this busy hub.
Word to the wise: If you've arranged an airport pick-up, note that sometimes drivers will not be allowed into the terminal for security reasons. They will most likely be waiting by Gate four or six.
There's no denying that Delhi's airport is a far more welcoming place post-makeover. Named after Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister and 'iron lady of India', it is the busiest airport in the country in terms of daily flight traffic. Located 16 kilometres south-west of the city centre, the airport is well connected by various transport modes.
The new metro line that links the city centre with the airport is a good way in and out, and trains run every ten minutes or so between the hours of 5am - 1am. However, it's easiest to either have your hotel collect you, pre-book a taxi online, or pick up a taxi on arrival - but only at the prepaid taxi counter inside the arrivals building. It will cost around INR 400 to Connaught Place, for example, unless you travel between 11pm - 5am when there is a 25 per cent surcharge.
Keep in mind that some domestic airlines depart from the old terminal, so be sure to check your ticket and factor in travel time from the main T3 building. Fog routinely causes delays during winter - avoid early morning/night flights from Dec-Jan.
