A romantic, characterful slice of Bohemian historyNoteworthy for: In summer months, hotel guests can use King Rudolf II's private entrance to the Prague castle gardens.
Talk of the town: Legend has it that that the original resident of the building, famous astronomer Tycho Brahe, encountered an apparition of the Virgin Mary here.
The Golden Well is an utterly charming hidden gem: to find it, you’ll need to follow a cobbled, steep lane which narrows until you reach a baroque entrance, leading you into this 19-room boutique abode. Located directly below Prague Castle, the hotel has a storied history dating back to the 16th century when it originally belonged to the Roman Emperor King Rudolf II, who then gifted the building to his astronomer.
And you’ll feel every bit of this history in the labyrinth of hallways connecting the five buildings that ascend Hradčany hill, the wall-panelled interiors, and the rooms which reflect the hotel’s rich heritage; all cosy, romantic and with historic touches (such as exposed original clay walls).
There’s a whole host of amenities on offer – complimentary welcome drinks, a large DVD library, and iPads – and if you do plan on spending an evening here (you’ll certainly want to), book a table at the hotel's highly-rated restaurant, Terasa U Zlaté Studně, where you’ll enjoy glorious views of the city’s many spires.
