According to locals, Viseisei Village located 12 km north of Nadi is the oldest settlement in Fiji. It is believed that the foundation was laid by some of the first settlers more than two millenniums ago. This village has also been home to some of Fijis leaders and has been host to dignitaries, such as Prince Charles. You will have to pay the ladies at the craft market to take you around. The fee is nominal, around $3-$5 and is well worth it. Visitors will get to experience real village life, enjoy ceremonial drums and visit a traditional chief’s hut and Methodist church. There is also an important monument in the village that houses a cross and a weapon called neck-breakers club that was earlier used by Fijian cannibals. Make sure to cover up your knees and shoulders, anything less is considered disrespectful. Just beyond this village is Vuda Point Marina, excellent venue for yacht lovers. There is a market here that runs from 8 am - noon every month on the second Saturday. Moreover, there is a restaurant, a store and free showers too.
