Word to wise: The Magnani room has an enormous bathroom with a jacuzzi bath perfect for soaking after a long day sight-seeing, while Loren, next to the garden, is probably the quietest.

In homage to screen sirens of a bygone era, this entire bed and breakfast is awash with fifties, sixties and seventies memorabilia from the jukebox to the film posters gracing the walls. Each of the three rooms is named after famous actresses - Sophia Loren, Anna Magnani and Monica Vitti - with decor dedicated to their namesake.

Located in the penthouse of an early 20th century palazzo - note there is no lift - in a residential area of Janiculum hill, the restaurants and bars of Trastevere are nearby, although the big sights are not on your doorstep. Staying here however, will give you an insight into real Rome. Charming owner Angelo lives here with his son, three cats and pet turtles, and makes you feel very welcome. His 250 square metre garden terrace, complete with table football, is ideal for admiring the views of Rome's skyline.
