Set on the junction of Lebuh Farquhar and Lebuh Light in George Town, Penang Museum & Art Gallery is one of the best curated repositories of national and state treasures. Established in 1821, the museum showcases Penang’s history, culture and festivals and includes an exquisite collection of Baba Nyonya porcelain, furniture, jewellery and costumes. The first floor of the museum is home to the art gallery which exhibits works of local artists, colonial prints and paintings of Old Penang. The statue of Francis Light (founder of the British colony of Penang) is erected right outside the museum to commemorate the 150th anniversary of founding of the State. Another interesting display outside is Penang Hill funicular railway which is also used as a kiosk for selling souvenirs.
