Named after the 18th century Governor-General of Bengal, India—Charles Cornwallis—this fort is the largest in Malaysia spanning across 3,32,859 square feet. Located close to the Esplanade, and adjacent to the Victoria Memorial Clock in George Town, the fort is the oldest surviving building from the colonial era: it was built by the British East India Company in the late 1700s. A walk inside the fort will take you through a chapel, prison cells, and several bronze canons. The fort is now also equipped with a historical gallery, tourist information kiosk, cafe, souvenir centre and an open-air amphitheatre where many cultural festivals are staged frequently.Fort Cornwallis
